How to use this bill splitter
- Add everyone who's paying. Rename the example people or add more.
- Enter each item and tap who had it. Tap several names for a shared dish, or leave it blank to split it across the whole table.
- Add the tax from the receipt and pick a tip. Each person's total updates as you go, and the totals always add up to the bill.
How the math works
Every item's price goes to whoever had it, and shared items are divided equally between the people who shared them. That gives each person an item subtotal. Tax and tip are then split in proportion to those subtotals, so whoever ordered more covers more of the tax and tip.
Say the food comes to $100 and Jordan's salad was $14 of it. Jordan pays 14% of the tax and 14% of the tip, not a quarter of each. It's the same method the SplitNShare app uses, and the step-by-step guide walks through a full example.
Bill splitting questions
How do you split a bill with tax and tip?
Add up what each person ordered, including their part of anything shared. Work out each person's share of the subtotal, then give them that same share of the tax and tip. Someone whose food was 25% of the subtotal pays 25% of the tax and tip too.
Read the full guide with an example →Should the tip be based on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?
Etiquette guides commonly suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, and that's what this calculator does. Plenty of people tip on the total after tax instead, which adds a little more. Either way, splitting the tip in proportion to what each person ordered keeps it fair.
How do you split a shared appetizer?
Divide its price between the people who ate it before working out anything else. Here, tap every name that shared it. If nobody is selected, the item is split between the whole table.
Should we split evenly or by item?
An even split is fine when everyone ordered similar amounts. When orders differ a lot, like one person skipping drinks or getting a much bigger meal, splitting by item is fairer.
When to split evenly vs. by item →Is this calculator free? Do you save my data?
Yes, it's free with no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
Does it work with other currencies?
Yes. The math is the same for any currency; amounts are just shown with a $ sign.
